As you may have gathered, I came away from Japan with more than just a set of photographs and a bank statement from hell. I never expected to meet someone special in Japan; it's a bit of a long commute from Zürich. The good news was that Jayne finished work in Japan at the end of June. The bad news is that she has moved home to Toronto. Sadly, our relationship never survived. I had an idea to put all the pictures I had of Jayne on this page, but although I amassed a good set, most of them came pre-embargoed: "Don't show these to anyone else, because I look like a knob"
This picture comes complete with the subject's blessing. Here is what she says about it: "When children turn 7,5 or 3 in Japan it is a special year for them. So in the November of their special year the family get dressed in kimono, have their family portrait taken and go to a shrine for some kind of blessing. It's called shichi, go, san (7,5,3). Anyway, my homestay family [the family who provide board and lodging] asked me to be a part of their shichi, go, san. This photo was taken at a shrine. At the entrance of shrines there's this water trough thing to wash your hands. I couldn't resist acting stupid and highlighting my foreigner status."
