This was to be the trip of a lifetime. I went to Thailand for the first time in 1999 and fell in love with it. When I came back to Switzerland I vowed to go on a big trip at the end of my contract. As it turned out, my contract was renewed but UBS were still happy (not to say keen) to give me three months off.

As I was planning the trip, it soon became clear that I couldn't see everything I wanted to. I very quickly removed the Philippines and Indonesia from my schedule, the latter fortuitously, because it all kicked off just before I went. I decided to start at Bangkok and do as much as I could by train, bus and boat.
